Our Sammic Scholars for BasqueStage, Ruth and Elisha, were recently featured in the Basque news source, Noticias de Gipuzkoa.
Noticias de Gipuzkoa is one of the most widely read news sources in this province of Basque Country, home to San Sebastián. In this interview, Ruth and Elisha were introduced to the people of Gipuzkoa and did a pretty great interview that included such epic questions as “Real o Atletic?” (the two local soccer teams) and “If you had a pintxo named after you, what would it be?”

The second round of BasqueStage opened to applications last week, and the interest shown has been incredible. We are receiving the first wave of candidate applications as we speak. You will be able to keep up with the applicants just like last year on our webpage, www.basquestage.com. The first step to applying is registering your basic information: name, email and the like. Then, you must submit your resumé and an essay. The last step is filming a video that shows us your communication skills and personality. It is only after THIS video is uploaded that your name will be visible on the Candidate section of our website. Don’t forget to sign up for our newsletter to keep up to date on the recent developments, too.
So remember: your candidacy will not show up on the Candidate List until you submit both registration AND video. But don’t worry, we have your information and you are registered. So get filming!

BasqueStage was recently called a “Restaurant Job of Your Dreams” by Bon Appetit:
If you’ve ever considered rolling up your sleeves and working the line in a professional kitchen, you know that good stages (restaurant speak for “internships”) are hard to get. And you know that you better be hungry for the work, because primo restaurants like the French Laundry and Le Bernardin have hundreds of applicants willing to work for free. It’s considered a privilege to work under the best in the biz.
Enter BasqueStage, a dream of an internship: six months at three-Michelin star restaurant Martin Berasategui in the Basque region of Spain, travel and housing paid for, health insurance, and 500 euros per month. Unheard of!”
Read the rest here. Or just get straight to business by applying, here.
Today marks the official opening of the second Sammic BasqueStage scholarship.
From March 1st through April 15th, young American cooks can apply to be a BasqueStage from July 2011 through December 2011. The application process is simple: first, register your candidacy on our website. Second, submit the necessary documents: a PDF resume, a PDF essay telling us why you want to be a Basque Stage, and the address of your blog, if you have one. Third, submit a video that shows off your culinary and communication skills. You can see some videos from last year here .
What do you stand to win?
- A six-month stage, sponsored by Sammic foodservice equipment company, in a three-Michelin star restaurant, Martín Berasategui. But not your average stage—the winners receive a grant of 500 euros per month.
- Winners will also be provided with an apartment in Lasarte, ten minutes outside of San Sebastián, where the restaurant is located.
- We’ve got the practicalities covered, too…no need to worry about little things like health insurance and the flight to Spain.
- You will get your name in front of some of the biggest names in the culinary world: last year’s judges included Thomas Keller, Daniel Bouloud, and several of the numerous Michelin-starred chefs from Basque Country.
